Thomas Ehretsmann

"If ever a look meant death - if ever looks could kill - we saw it at that moment."

- Dracula, Chapter XVI

Goni Montes

"Many cultures believe that on a certain day - Halloween, the Irish Samhain Eve, Mexico's 'Dia de los Muertos' - the veil between this world and the next is especially thin."

- Michael Dirda

David Palumbo

"I'm a master of fright, and a demon of light, and I'll scare you right out of your pants...And since I am dead, I can take off my head to recite Shakespearean quotations. No animal or man can SCREAM like I can, with the fury of my recitations."

- Pumpkin King, The Nightmare Before Christmas

Michal Lisowski

"When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth."

- Unknown

Paul Cox

"If ever there was a holiday that deserves to be commercialized, it's Halloween. We haven't taken it away from kids. We've just expanded it so that the kid in adults can enjoy it, too."

- Cassandra Peterson

Mark Elliott

"There is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects, rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world."

- Jean Baudrillard

Rob Rey

"I love the spirit of Halloween and the energy that comes with it."

- Katharine McPhee

Piotr Jablonski

"I have never seen a greater monster or miracle in the world than myself."

- Bram Stoker, Dracula

Jason Seiler

"We fear death so profoundly, not because it means the end of our body, but because it means the end of our consciousness - better to be a spirit in Heaven than a zombie on Earth."

- Alison Gopnik

Tran Nguyen

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."

- Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven

Guy Stauber

"It has nothing to do with Satan, Mama. It's me. Me. If I concentrate hard enough, I can move things."

- Carrie (1976)

Tim Bower

"I think there are ghosts. I haven't seen or heard anything. I've definitely felt something, but it's not scary."

- Robbie Williams

C.F. Payne

"Werewolves were far more terrifying than vampires. It is probably the idea of seeing the human within the beast and knowing you can't reach it!"

- Glen Duncan

Tyler Jacobson

"It's said that All Hallows' Eve is one of the nights when the veil between the worlds is thin - and whether you believe in such things or not, those roaming spirits probably believe in you, or at least acknowledge your existence, considering that it used to be their own."

Abend Gallery // Inner Visions: Contemporary Imaginative Realism

THIS SATURDAY October 8th Denver, Colorado is in for a treat.

Abend Gallery will be having their opening reception for their new show, "Inner Visions". Having invited over 70 artists to contribute works, amongst them two of our artists, Rob Rey and Dave Palumbo, the body of work encapsulates a more contemporary approach to more conceptual narratives.

'Bioluminescence IV', Rob Rey

"
Imaginative realism, as the cutting edge of contemporary realist painting, combines classical painting technique with postmodern narrative subjects, focusing on the unreal, the unseen, and the impossible, offering visions of humanity’s mythic past, its unexplored future and, in some cases, its terrifying present.

Inner Visions brings together over 70 artists covering the gamut of contemporary imaginative realism, showcasing the remarkable diversity of work being created under its banner. The show includes upcoming young artists side by side with award-winning, world renowned painters with multiple monographs dedicated to their work. Their work hangs everywhere from galleries and museums to major private and corporate collections.

“Imaginative realism satisfies a dual urge in the viewer, “says co-curator Patrick Wilshire. “It meets the viewer’s desire for aesthetic quality and appreciation of technical skill, but also provides the opportunity to experience narrative, character and concept within that technically-skilled framework.”
"

WHEN:
October 8th - November 11th, 2016
Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct 8, 6-9 pm

Rick Berry Artist Demonstration: Saturday, Oct 8th, 3-5pm

A show curated by Patrick and Jeannie Wilshire, Directors of IX Arts

'Death and Queen', David Palumbo

Karla Ortiz // Schoolism Live in NY!

In lieu of the excitement that October brings to costume addicts, dress-up aficionados, and all-around creatives (woo, Halloween!), we have another reason to get you pumped!

This weekend New York hosts its biggest annual 'pop culture' convention - New York Comic Con, and Schoolism LIVE has teamed up with the crew over at NYCC to host six of today's leading creative minds. Amongst the amazing panel, RSAR artist Karla Ortiz will be teaching a workshop centered around Character Illustration:

"In this workshop, live-action concept artist, Karla Ortiz, teaches her methods for illustrating characters in a narrative setting from conceptual idea to finish. Creating a relationship between the viewer and the artwork is a tricky task, but by keeping in mind narrative hierarchies, composition of elements, and a character’s personality, you will be able to make your character feel more alive in a storied world.
This workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced level students."

Although the workshops this time around are SOLD OUT (cause duh, the guest panelists are great), consider this a friendly nudge to get your tickets early next time!

And for those who may be interested in joining in on the NYCC fun, the only available date at this time is Thursday October 6th; so get your ticket!

What is NYCC?
"New York Comic Con is the East Coast's biggest and most exciting popular culture convention. Our Show Floor plays host to the latest and greatest in comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies and television. Our screening rooms feature sneak peeks at films and television shows months before they hit big and small screens. New York Comic Con is the second largest pop culture convention in America and the only one that takes place in the comic book, publishing, media and licensing capital of the world — Gotham City."
