Goni Montes - Mother, Crone, Maiden and Process

Tor books used the skills of Goni Montes once again for the cover of an upcoming book by Author Cat Hellisen. He always adds a great dynamic element to anything he does.

And as always, Goni has shared his interesting Process:

"Cat Hellisen‘s Mother, Crone, Maiden was a bit of a challenge. Full of intense, risky visuals, it proved rather difficult to choose some over others. It took one or two days just to come up with thumbnails, a process that normally takes a few hours.

Irene and I decided to take the trippy route with this one

And then I went seriously overboard with the inks. Painting this was more of an excavation process than anything else.

After hours of lasso tooling this into shape, this is what emerged."

C.F. Payne Receives a BolognaRagazzi Award for "Lineup for Yesterday"

C.F. Payne has done numerous children's books in the past, many of them winning international awards. Recently "Lineup for Yesterday", his collaboration with Ogden Nash, won the BolognaRagazzi Award for a children's nonfiction book in the Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy. For this book, Payne illustrated the greates baseball players of yesteryear to accompany the witty verses of Nash. Here is what the judges had to say about his work:

"Looking at these faces defined meticulous art of an old miniature, observing the care of the wonderful characters and typological analysis made here, it is tempting to regard the book "only" as one of the most brilliant treatises on sociology of sport. But there's more... The atmosphere of these figures is deliberately twilight, they are wonderfully ambitious: eyes, noses, mouths, hands propose again the silence of history on details that are lost. Payne tells many stories with the vibrant tones of accuracy..."
