Michal Dziekan - Castaway Santa

Michal Dziekan sent us this self generated illustration today, wishing us a happy holiday season and apocalypse. We just love all the details in this hilarious illustration (check out the bird choking on a candy-cane). Michal, you are awesome.

Tyler Jacobson - Sports Illustrated, The Power of Ten

Tyler Jacobson had only a few short days to complete these 10 portraits. The illustration accompanied an article honoring 10 modern athletes dedicated to helping others. It's also a throwback to an article published in 1987 featuring philanthropic athletes of that time.

Top Row: Tamika Catchings, Clayton Kershaw
Second Row: Chrissie Wellington, Grant Hill, Steve Mesler
Third Row: Didier Drogba, Roz Savage
Bottom Row: Larry Fitzgerald, Kelly Brush Davisson, Brendon Ayanbadejo

Art Basel Miami

I've just returned from a week at the annual Art Basel Miami Art Fair and what a week it was.

20 separate fairs showcasing everything from the big names: Picaso, Braque, Chuck Close, Richard Prince, and Henry Moore, to the young and upcoming artists from every part of the world. There were individual fairs dedicated to graffiti art, contemporary Asian art, environments, and sculpture, etc. Art Dealers from Buenos Aires, San Diego, New York, Madrid… you name it, were buying, selling and showcasing.

And the people watching… don't get me started, let's just call it "a show". This is a place to be, and to strut your stuff.

Needless to say, I enjoyed myself for what has become an annual pilgrimage.

I was lucky to have my artist, Mark T. Smith as my wing man for the week's festivities. Mark's studio is in Miami and he is a font of knowledge about where to go and see the most interesting art as well as what to do after dark.

If you love art and need a break in early December, come down to Miami to take the pulse of the current art market.

What follows are some pictures from the fairs.

Bill Sanderson - Shakespeare's Pub

Steve Snider, Creative Director over at St. Martin's Press, has been our friend for a long time. So when it came time to commission an illustration for the book Shakespeare’s Pub - A Barstool History of London As Seen Through the Windows of Its Oldest Pub - The George Inn, he knew just who to turn to. Bill Sanderson, being a brit himself, delivered this old-timey work of art for the cover. Here it is sketch to finish:

The book won't be available until May 2013 but can be pre-ordered at B&N, Amazon, and other retailers.

Goni Montes - Sick, Brah

Goni Montes has been regularly working for Skiing Magazine for a few months now, always creating fun and quirky illustrations. Here is one from earlier in November for an article about altitude sickness.

And here's 2 more from previous issues:

Edward Kinsella III - Pissed Jeans, Honeys

Seattle based record label Sub Pop Records contacted Edward Kinsella to create an illustration for one of their bands, Pissed Jeans. His art now graces the cover of their new album, Honeys.

Gregory Manchess - John Jameson Subway Ads

If you live in NYC and ride the subway, you've probably seen Jameson Whiskey's ads plastered all over the 6 train (among other places). We loved their new campaign featuring old-school paintings of John Jameson when it was first released and secretly hoped that they would turn to us to continue the campaign. Well, as luck would have it, they did. TBWA turned to Gregory Manchess to create 2 more paintings for the ads:

Jason Seiler - "The Good Wife" New York Observer

As is typical with The New York Observer commissions, Jason Seiler had less than 2 days complete this cover. But he's no stranger to working under pressure and delivered this great illustration:
